From Arizona http://www.getoutaz.com/story/2429 Keith Urban brings his rocking country style to US Airways By Chris Hansen Orf, Get Out June 9, 2007 Country star Keith Urban told a packed house at Phoenix's US Airways Center Friday night that the last six months of his life, which included a stint in rehab and the postponement of his world tour, had been a tough time for him, and he thanked the crowd for standing by him. “It’s been a wacky few months,” Urban said. “It’s nice to be back on the straight and narrow.” The newly sober Urban kicked off the American leg of his “Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy World Tour” in the Valley, playing a mixture of older hits and songs from his latest CD “Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing” (photos). Urban has always had more in common with fellow Aussies AC/DC than traditional country artists like Merle Haggard and George Jones, but the singer’s brand of rocking country fits perfectly in the new Nashville regime, where fiddles and pedal steel are out and heavy guitars are in. “He’s more modern – I like that he plays a lot of rock in his country,” said Katie Poltash of Phoenix. “And he’s hot.” The singer, dressed casually in black jeans and a black T-shirt, kicked off his nearly two-hour set with “Once in a Lifetime,” the lead single from “Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing.” The Aussie's stellar lead guitar work, acoustic picking and piano playing show a pure musical talent that separates the singer from many of Nashville’s current leading men. Urban and his crack five-piece backing band (all of whom are multi-instrumentalists) whipped through several Urban’s No. 1 country hits -- tunes such as “Somebody Like You,” “Who Wouldn't Wanna Be Me,” “Making Memories of Us” and “Better Life.” The set also included Top 5 songs “Raining on Sunday” (which Urban played solo on an acoustic guitar), the gorgeous “Tonight I Wanna Cry” (which Urban performed solo on piano) and “You’re My Better Half.” Just as popular as Urban’s older hits were the cuts off “Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing” were just as popular with the crowd as the older hits. Tunes such as the recent Top 5 hit “Stupid Boy,” current Top 10 single “I Told You So,” “Faster Car” and “I Can't Stop Loving You” were welcomed by fans. During his encore, sitting alone onstage behind a keyboard, Urban got choked up as he thanked the fans once again for their support throughout the last few months. He then dedicated the ballad “Got It Right This Time” to his wife, actress Nicole Kidman, who sent roses to his bus Friday afternoon before the show Urban said. Judging by Friday night’s performance, Urban should clear off some space on his mantle for Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music “Entertainer of the Year” awards. His combination of musical chops and a high energy show make him the country artist to beat in 2007. Country duo The Wreckers opened the show with a 40 minute set featuring cuts from their debut disc, “Stand Still, Look Pretty,” including the Top 10 hits “Leave the Pieces” and “My Oh My.” Arizona’s Michelle Branch, who makes up the duo with Jessica Harp, told the late arriving crowd that it was good to be back home. “I don’t know if any of you know this,” Branch said, “but I’m from a little town called Sedona.” Branch, who rose to national prominence as a rock singer-songwriter earlier in the decade, formed The Wreckers with Harp in 2004. With the success of the band –“Stand Still, Look Pretty” was a Top 5 album on the country chart – she may have found a home in country music. “She’s got a beautiful voice,” said Sedona’s Chris McCullough, who went to school with Branch at Sedona Red Rock High School. “She can do anything she puts her mind to. | |||
